Salty Bags
In Corfu, one of the most beautiful islands in the Ionian Sea, four years ago a group of people inspired and created against the crisis and the misery of the time.
Spyros Dikos, Chryssa Halikiopoulou and Stratis Andreadis, with different career paths (Spyros was involved in the trade, Chrysa worked as a product designer in Milan while Stratis was an international match racer) were found in 2013 to start a brand Which four years later would be worshiped by all women.
“It is very interesting that none of us had, before the creation of the Salty Bags ,any relationship with the field. The idea started from Corfu. We are a group of young people living and working on this beautiful Ionian island. In fact, the two of us are from there (Chryssa, Spyros) while Stratis is from Athens, “says Spyros.
The concept of Salty Bags is the manufacture of handbags from departed sailboats. We rely on the idea of upcycling, a pioneering idea for Greece. For us, the main part of our work is the collection of sail stories that live again through the new owners. Our motto is “We love making bags that you love” and we firmly believe that the world does not need another bag. That is why we want to give much more than that.
Like other innovative companies born in the crisis, we have been self-determined by a will, as Ezra Pood said, “Doing It New“. The Salty Bags was born to make objects, everyday, simple, and easy to use, with an identity that comes out of modern stories in our seas.
A basic pillar of our philosophy is corporate social responsibility. We believe that a company must not only protect the environment but also return something to the society in which it operates. Upcycling in Greek can be explained as an attempt to give life to a waste by “evolving” it into something useful, to serve us daily, and not simply to recycle it. We also “transform” it into a product that has a history and can acquire a new story from the buyer. And we finally see that all this effort is being welcomed by the world that supports us!
Apart from us, there is also a staff of four more talented associates who have taken on the difficult task of manufacturing handbags, all handmade. The process – depending on the size and type of the bag – lasts from three to five days. Specifically, the sails come to us and after the necessary recording, they are washed through a special process and dried. Then, depending on the model of the bag, they are cut into hand and then sewn again in hand. Though we always say that it is entirely made by hand, the world ,when seen from close, is impressed, due to the fact that today for a few things we can say that they are really handmade.
In total, Salty bags has created 7 collections to date. “Our latest creation was launched last autumn and has been released since March – our Mantara collection, a great collaboration with the leading Beetroot Design Group.
