EN – Architectural punctuation – Architectural design of a hotel’s outdoor area – Aegean Island
My main focus in this design study was to follow the “genetic line” of the place — the underlying thread that carries cultural and architectural memory.
Rather than reproducing existing forms or volumes, I aimed to uncover the essence that shaped traditional architecture: the “social sculptures” of small-scale settlements, created instinctively by the anonymous craftsmen of the past. These informal architects worked with what they had — local materials, limited tools, and a deep understanding of place.
Over time, new architectural elements such as neoclassical and eventually modern structures were introduced. Often, these additions were absorbed into the built environment with harmony, reflecting the evolving vision of the community.
For me, the most valuable design tool remains this deeply rooted instinct — shaped by culture, use, proportion, materialism, and sensitivity to context. My approach was guided by respect for that instinct: to interpret and compose the space carefully, to integrate its history and identity, and at the same time, offer a contemporary perspective.
Every element of this proposal has been conceptually and spatially refined.
The project that follows is a built reflection of this design thinking.
